Delivering an e-commerce platform is a complex process that requires expertise in various areas. In this case study, we will look at the migration of an e-commerce platform based on Magento to Sylius. Sylius is a well-known e-commerce platform with a reputation for stability, scalability, ease of hosting, and quality overall. The migration was made for the online food store in Germany and as a result, met all of the Client's requirements.
Workshops are an essential part of each project. They provide an opportunity for us to learn about Clients’ specific needs. He explained why Magento doesn’t meet his requirements, so we could have recognized the problems and set the priorities for our work. We prepared a mood board with ideas for the project and then suggested Sylius as the solution to all his problems, and the Client liked that idea. The workshop was very productive - we discussed available options for Sylius and how it could be customized for the Client.
Migration from Magento to Sylius is no small feat. In order to create a platform that is both user-friendly and scalable, it is important to choose a team of specialists with the right skills and experience. First, we chose specialists who have a deep understanding of Sylius and are able to create custom solutions - three backend developers, two frontend developers, a UX/UI designer, and a project manager.
As Magento architecture cannot be simply copied into Sylius, the development team had to design it from scratch. We know that it's important to create a platform that is visually appealing and easy to use. That's where UI/UX design comes in. A good designer is able to create a compelling visual experience that engages users and encourages them to make purchases, by easily navigating and finding what they're looking for. Ultimately, a well-designed e-commerce platform can make the difference between a successful business and one that struggles to get off the ground.
The Clients complained that Magento was too expensive to develop, support, and maintain, and also too slow. What’s more, the sales in his shop were very low, and he noticed that a lot of customers interrupt purchasing, and abandon carts. To deal with all these problems, we had to adjust all Sylius features to the customer's requirements and make the online store as best as possible!
The client has an online food store in Germany. It specializes in selling fresh, organic, and locally sourced food - high-quality meat, fish, and seafood, BIO fruits, vegetables, and dairy products from organic farms. The increasing awareness of the importance of consuming food quality influences customers' purchasing decisions - in recent years, there has been a growing trend of people choosing to buy and eat healthy, organic, and bio food.
Let’s start with the fact that Magento 1 is no longer officially supported since June 2020. What does it mean? It means that the platform is not only outdated but also vulnerable to cyber attacks. What’s more, the platform had no documentation, so it was difficult to figure out the system logic. Of course, they could have migrated from Magento 1 to Magento 2.4.6, but it would generate additional costs, which they wanted to avoid.
“Using Magento we had a lot of security problems, so it needed constant monitoring from the agency. To be honest - it was very risky and expensive for my company!” - Store owner
Sylius is an open-source, headless eCommerce system, which focuses on decoupling the different components of an eCommerce platform. This approach makes it possible to develop each component separately and then integrate them together, rather than having to build the entire eCommerce system from scratch.
Sylius is a very safe system because it’s headless, server-side, and can be cloud hosted. It is updated every 3-6 months with a strong Backward Compatibility promise. In comparison to other eCommerce platforms, Sylius is cheaper - the costs of subscription are lower and faster - all of the Sylius platforms have great performance. What’s more, it’s much easier to find IT developers with Symfony skills, so the costs of the projects are lower, which can be a deciding fact, while planning the development.
Sylius allows businesses to easily manage their online stores and provides a wide range of features. Our Client's main goal was to receive a platform that he and his team would easily manage, so Sylius was the perfect option.
We were able to customize the platform to meet our Client's needs and create a unique eCommerce experience. Some of the features we implemented:
Page loading time is essential if you want to keep your customers satisfied, so we did our best to reduce it as much as possible. Research shows that users leave websites that load for more than 3 seconds. That’s why performance optimization is so crucial if you want to boost sales. We changed product photos from .jpg to .webp. format - Webp extension simplifies the loading of graphics. And we also implemented lazy loading - when you open the website, you see only the upper part of the page, but when you scroll down, then other parts load and appear.
To provide the best website results possible, we adjusted it to the current SEO standards and requirements:
The previous website had the main problem: difficulties in navigation. To resolve that problem, we updated a sitemap and menu navigation, which resulted in a better customer experience while navigating the website. What’s more, we do know that today’s clients are impatient, and need to shop online very quickly. We did research on customers' behaviors with the use of analytical tools, and found out, where the problem was. That’s why we have simplified the customer’s purchasing process, so now he’s able to make a purchase with only 5 clicks. It resulted in a 110% higher cart conversion rate.
Our Client is now able to reach a wider audience and sell products easily across the German market. 3 months after migrating from Magento to Sylius, the cart conversion rate was 110% higher! The store was visited 400% more times, and the First Contentful Page loads in only 4 milliseconds! This result is impossible to achieve on any other platforms like Magento, Presta, or Shopify. We were completely astonished by these outcomes. We always are, when we look at the results after implementing Sylius. :)
“The migration between Magento and Sylius is a real life changer. Now, the whole website loads much faster than ever before! We achieved results that are impossible to achieve on any other platforms like Magento, Presta, or Shopify. ” - The Store Sales Manager
The Client was very happy with the result of the migration and the final version of the Store. He found that it was very stable and it met all of his requirements. He was also impressed with the quality of the platform and how easy it was to host. Overall, he was very satisfied with the job that Spinbits did and he claimed he would recommend us to anyone looking for a software house to deliver a custom project!
